Global Fellowship in Advanced Penile Surgery, Prosthetic Urology & Men's Health
Dr. Ross Calopedos undertook an advanced global clinical training fellowship to broaden his expertise in prosthetic urology, sexual health and penile surgery. Recognising the importance of learning from the best in the world, rather than just one method in one location, he completed multiple specialist fellowship programs in the most globally renowned centres of excellence, each offering unique exposure to the latest surgical techniques and treatment protocols for erectile dysfunction, peyronie's disease, low testosterone, ejaculatory problems, penile implant surgery, and other aspects of both male and female sexual dysfunction. His multi-faceted approach integrates expertise from global leaders, allowing him to bring world-class urological care to his patients in Australia. This diverse experience ensures that Dr. Ross Calopedos offers the most advanced and comprehensive patient-centric care possible.
Lyx Instituto de Urología International Fellowship
In Spain, Dr. Ross Calopedos had the privilege of joining the prestigious Lyx Institute, a leading multidisciplinary centre for urology in Madrid, renowned as Europe’s highest volume referral centre for Peyronie's disease. Here, he gained substantial hands-on experience in managing Peyronie's disease, encompassing both conservative treatment, such as oral medications and physical therapy; intralesional treatments and further honed his surgical expertise in his work on a variety of Peyronie’s corrective surgeries, including the Plication, Nesbit, and Yachia techniques, Penile Implant and complex grafting procedures using autologous rectus fascia, rather than off the off the shelf graft material. This experience extended to the placement of both penoscrotal and infrapubic inflatable penile prostheses (IPP) and malleable penile prostheses (MPP), broadening his surgical expertise. Additionally, Dr. Ross Calopedos trained in penile duplex ultrasound under the guidance of Dr. Eugenio Cerezo, the world’s most experienced penile ultrasound specialist. This allowed him to develop a deep understanding of penile anatomy and function, enabling him to accurately diagnose and treat complex conditions related to erectile dysfunction. Additionally, under the mentorship of Dr. Ignacio Sola, Dr. Ross Calopedos expanded his proficiency in minimally invasive treatments for prostate enlargement, mastering both Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) and the newer and more advanced Minimally Invasive Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (MiLEP). MiLEP offers potential benefits such as reduced trauma to the urethra, lower risk of urinary incontinence, and shorter recovery times with same-day catheter removal in some cases, making it a significant advancement in BPH treatment. This comprehensive training has equipped him to provide tailored, patient-specific solutions for men facing erectile dysfunction, Peyronie's disease and urinary problems due to enlarged prostate, further solidifying his position as a leader in men's health.
Focused Clinical Rotation in Andrology and Genital Reconstruction
In London, Dr. Ross Calopedos worked alongside Professor David Ralph, a world-renowned expert in Peyronie’s Disease, Erectile Dysfunction and complex genital reconstructive surgery. While collaborating with Professor Ralph, he contributed to significant research, including a position paper on the nuances of early penile prosthesis placement after prolonged ischemic priapism—a groundbreaking approach to restoring sexual function for men with this condition. During this focused apprenticeship, Dr. Ross Calopedos developed advanced surgical techniques in managing genital lymphedema, buried penis, and severe Peyronie’s disease. He honed his skills in performing suprapubic lipectomy, abdominoplasty, scrotoplasty, phallopexy, the 'Batman' and 'Hanger-shaped' scrotectomy and skin grafting procedures. Dr. Calopedos deepened his expertise in managing severe cases of Peyronie’s disease, learning advanced techniques such as plaque excision and grafting without penile tourniquet and ventral corporoplasty following penile disassembly; in addition to treatments for to post-prostatectomy climacturia, such as the mini-Jupette. His time in London allowed him to refine his reconstructive urology techniques, offering comprehensive, patient-specific care.
Advanced Fellowship Rotation with ESSM Chair, Professor Koenraad van Renterghem in Hasselt, Belgium.
Dr. Calopedos trained with Professor Koenraad van Renterghem in Belgium, a renowned leader and innovator in urological prosthetics and men’s. During this time, Dr. Calopedos gained invaluable hands-on experience in advanced penile implant techniques, particularly for complex cases involving multiple urological conditions. Professor van Renterghem is known for his groundbreaking approach to simultaneous double implant surgery—where both an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) and an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) are implanted through a single transcrotal incision, without compromising correct cuff placement or patient outcomes. This innovative technique reduces time under general anaesthesia, minimises recovery time and reduces complication rates by lowering the number of incisions from three to just one. It offers an expedited, safer solution for men suffering from both erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, particularly following prostate cancer treatment. This technique was the corner stone of Dr. Ross Calopedos's training in Belgium, allowing him to further refine his skills in advanced, minimally invasive techniques, giving him the ability to offer more efficient and streamlined solutions for men recovering from prostate cancer. By learning from one of the most respected figures in the field, he ensures that his patients receive the highest standard of care and the most up-to-date treatments available.
University of Toronto Surgical Mastery Program in Minimally-Invasive Surgical Therapies (MIST) for Enlarged Prostate.
During his time with Dr. Dean Elterman, a leading expert in minimally invasive treatments for BPH, Dr. Calopedos gained hands-on experience with cutting-edge therapies like Aquablation, Rezum (water vapor therapy), Optilume BPH Catheter System, UroLift (prostatic urethral lift) and iTind (Temporary Implanted Nitinol Device) procedures. These minimally invasive treatments provide effective symptom relief while preserving sexual function, making them ideal for men seeking non-invasive solutions for prostate enlargement. Dr. Elterman’s expertise in patient-centered decision-making and selection of treatments based on individual patient profiles further enhanced Dr. Ross Calopedos's skills in offering tailored care for men with enlarged prostate, ensuring optimal outcomes with minimal side effects for each patient’s unique needs.
Advanced Clinical Fellowship in Men's Health and Penile Implant Surgery
Training under Dr. Paul Perito, the highest-volume penile implant surgeon in the world and a global leader in men’s health, Dr. Ross Calopedos mastered the advanced minimally-invasive infrapubic approach for penile prosthesis insertion. This technique, pioneered by Dr. Perito, drastically reduces recovery time while enhancing patient outcomes. With this innovative surgical approach combined and an accelerated rehabilitation protocol, an impressive 85% of patients resume sexual activity within just 14-21 days post-operation. Having performed over 200 penile implant surgeries using this technique during his time in Miami, Dr. Ross Calopedos now brings this expertise to Australia, offering men a more efficient and effective solution to restore erectile function, with quicker recovery, less pain and optimal results. Dr. Calopedos also became proficient in various techniques for safe reservoir placement, including the new game-changing midline technique, which allows safe placement in all men irrespective of their surgical background, through the same 3cm incision. His experience included >50 non-standard cases such as salvage malleable penile prosthesis placement after infection, glans hypermobility correction, obturator fenestration in cases of corporal fibrosis, endocavernotomy for erectile body stenosis and the famous Perito 'Scratch' technique, which allows minimally invasive correction of penile curvature and deformities from the inside of the affected corpora, rather than the invasive exposure from the outside used in all other techniques. Dr. Ross Calopedos further enhanced his expertise at the renowned Perito Clinic, a world-class men's health centre in Miami, where he became Australia's leading expert in the UroFill® penile girth enhancement technique. This specialised training enables him to provide non-surgical aesthetic improvements for men seeking enhancement without compromising function. By mastering these advanced, minimally invasive solutions, Dr. Ross Calopedos offers a unique approach to men in Australia—addressing not only cosmetic concerns but also urological conditions like Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction with precision and care.
